"Hanyu Pinyin is the official system to transcribe Mandarin Chinese sounds into the Roman alphabet. It was invented in 1950s, and adopted as a standard in mainland China in 1958. Pinyin is used for several purposes, such as teaching Chinese, transcribing names and places into the roman alphabet, and used as an input method for typing Chinese characters.

Pinyin is not the only system devised to transcribe Chinese sounds into roman letters. An older system called Wade-Giles was used in the first half of the 20th century, and it has left its mark on the English language. For instance, 功夫 is romanized as "kungfu" in Wade-Giles, but "gongfu" in Pinyin. Also, 北京 (the capital of China) was in the past romanized as "Peking", but is "Beijing" in Pinyin. El chino mandarín es una lengua tonal. Existen cuatro tonos principales y un tono neutro.

1. El primer tono se representa con un macrón (ˉ) sobre la vocal:

   (ɑ̄) ā ō ē ī ū ǖ

2. El segundo tono se marca con un acento agudo (ˊ):

   (ɑ́) á ó é í ú ǘ

3. El tercer tono se representa con un carón ( ˇ ), distinto del breve (˘) que no es picudo:

   (ɑ̌) ǎ ǒ ě ǐ ǔ ǚ

4. El cuarto tono se simboliza con un acento grave (ˋ):

   (ɑ̀) à ò è ì ù ǜ

5. El quinto tono o tono neutral se representa sin acentos gráficos:

   (ɑ) a o e i u ü

También se suele indicar el número correspondiente al tono después de cada sílaba ("tóng" o "tong2"). El "quinto tono" puede no indicarse, indicarse con el 5 (o un 0) o con un punto antes de la sílaba (·ma).

Las vocales pinyin son a, o, e, i, u, ü. La marca tonal se coloca en la vocal que aparece antes en el orden indicado. En palabras como liú, cuya auténtica pronunciación es lióu, se marca la óu (que se contrae a ú), ya que la o precede a la i.
